James St
Northbridge, Perth,
Western Australia
(From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)
Northbridge is a suburb of Perth, Western Australia currently promoted and known for its night life. It is just north of the Perth CBD, and is readily accessibly by foot from the Perth train station or Wellington Street bus station. It also has a significant number of public car parks, open and included in government buildings.
The location has the State Reference Library, The State Records Office, the Art Gallery of Western Australia, the Western Australian Museum and the Perth TAFE centre just north of the railway station.
These are located in what was conceived as the 'Cultural Centre' - and they are connected easily to the railway station by a walkway.
Considerably 'cleaned up' the Cultural Centre and adjacent properties were as late as a decade ago complex and chaotic locations. Photographs taken from roof-tops in the city in the 1930s and earlier, show chaotic mixtures of residential, industrial and commercial properties. Police head offices would be in the same block as brothels.
The block which 'Megamart' formerly inhabited between Stirling Street and Beaufort Street, had been 11 separate titles prior to amalgamation, and had one of Perths' earlier multi-level car parks, a two story dog leg shaped arcade, old railway offices, as well as wine bars and restaurants.
Northbridge offers a plethora of cuisines from all over the world as well as a variety of places to drink or dance the night away on the major strips James Street and Lake Street. The Connections nightclub is the oldest continuously running LGBT nightclub in the southern hemisphere.
Northbridge is fast becoming the place to go for more alternative shopping. William Street, located on the opposite side of the Perth Train Station to the city malls, has a variety of independently owned businesses, mostly operated by the youth of Perth. Here you can find punk/goth/rockabilly fashion and footwear, graffiti art supplies, independent art galleries, anime/manga collectables and generally more unique stores. If you are bored of the same big clothing labels, you can find some really different, locally designed fashion, as well as some excellent vintage pieces.
